2011 GRAMMY Performances: Rihanna + Gaga + Katy + More!

The 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards were held last night at the Staples Center in LA. The show’s opening act, a star-studded tribute to Aretha Franklin, up’d the ante as 5 of the best female voices in the industry showed us what they were made of. Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, Yolanda Adams and Martina McBride all gave a tremendous performance honoring the Queen of Soul!
Christina definitely redeemed herself from last weekend’s fumble at Super Bowl XLV. Like Patti LaBelle expressed in her defence, Xtina has one of the best voices in the business, so why should she be bashed for something so small? — Christina’s voice is out of this world spectacular!
On a bad note, she did however fall onstage just as their performance ended. SMH.

Bruno Mars, B.O.B, and Janelle Monáe killed the show with an amazing dynamic performance that reinvented the past. Besides his voice sounding a little strained, I’m just wondering if there is anything that Bruno Mars can’t do. He writes crazy hits, sings, dances, and plays the drums?! Now that is what we call a STAR!

Lady Gaga was the most buzz-worthy entertainer of the night, as she arrived on the red carpet in an egg! Gaga later hatched from her egg as she emerged onto the GRAMMY stage to perform her latest single “Born This Way”.
She had an interesting choice of fashion for her performance (what else is new?), wearing a yellow latex bra, pasties, and skirt. In the middle of her performance she started to play the organ while singing her mega hits from last year. As for the finale, her dancers stripping off their latex outfits, wearing skin-colored leotards and undergarments.
I must admit that she gave one crazy performance. Gaga is always bringing something new and different to the game. Ryan Seacrest stated that she spent “three hours in her egg, in order to prepare for her performance!”

Some time last week, it was reported that Rihanna had become ill with bronchitis and was on strict doctors orders. It had everyone wondering if she was going to be able to perform during the GRAMMY Awards. But luckily, she was well enough to hit the stage with Eminem for a first-time stage performance of Love The Way You Lie Part 2, and with Drake for What’s My Name?.
I love when Ri brings the island flavor! I was so excited during the performance and couldn’t stop laughing when she and Drake started to dance together. Reminded me of an old-school Beyonce & Jay-Z, but Drake’s funny facial expressions is what turned the raunchy act into something cute and playful.

Katy Perry gave a beautiful performance that gave fans a glimpse of her Indian-themed wedding back in October. The backdrop showed Katy and Russell Brand exchanging vows, then ended with Russell lifting his bride’s veil to seal the deal with a kiss. It was magical!

Justin Bieber gave a mega performance starting with an acoustic version of his hit “Baby”, which lead into a super-hyped performance of “Never Say Never”. Jada and Will Smith’s son, Jaden Smith, joined “The Biebs” in his performance with a cute rap verse. Jada and Will looked so proud, as they cheered him on from the audience!
Usher joined the two for a performance of “OMG”, which got him a standing ovation.
