Hollywood favorite Elie Saab looked to the traditional Japanese robe-like garment for inspiration for his airy but intricate spring-summer haute couture collection Wednesday.
“It’s light and delicate like a Japanese (haiku) poem,” said the Lebanese designer, whose ultra-feminine creations are among A-list actresses’ favorites.
Breathy chiffons in dusty pastel shades were paired with taffeta silks, whose neat pleats evoked origami. A brocade belt that looked like it had just been peeled off a geisha was worn just under the dresses’ bust-line, lending the empire waists an Asian touch. A short, asymmetrical wrap dress in mauve with one full sleeve looked like a kimono after a fight with a pair of scissors. The full skirt of a princess gown looked like it was made from a kimono belt endlessly wrapped around itself. The beadwork was intricate, framing the evening gowns’ plunging backs in a burst of chiffon flowers, like cherry blossoms.
The crowd, which was largely made up of moneyed Middle Easterners, burst into applause when a bride, in a beige princess gown with a pleated taffeta bustier and oversized organza roses climbing up the hemline, promenaded down the catwalk.

Paris Fashion Week:: Valentino Haute Couture - S/S 2009

Wednesday’s Valentino show turned out to be a long homage to the career of the recently retired Signor Valentino, who sat front row and eventually stood and applauded his two long-time design assistants, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, as did all the main staffers of the house at the show.
One could not fault the collection for taste, or its excellent cutting, or the clean silhouette or the continued dexterity and striking quality of the Roman atelier. However, this spring 2009 collection was an almost verbatim restatement of the founder’s style. The collection looked at times like it had been lifted from Valentino’s wonderful retrospective last year in the Louvre.
There were some super elegant looks - an organdie dress with ivory guipure flowers, a dramatic vermillion draped cocktail in Valentino’s signature sinful red and a truly stunning organza petal bolero over a long mousseline sheath. But, overall, the show ended up feeling like an extended thrift shop discovery of the designer’s past favorites.

Paris Fashion Week:: Stephane Rolland Haute Couture - S/S 2009

French designer Stephane Rolland made his debut Monday as a full member of the elite club of grands couturiers, sending out an imaginative collection of cocktail dresses and evening gowns that played on bold beadwork and unexpected elements like bustles and capes.
The collection, which opened with 10 little back dresses, was heavier on daywear than most haute couture shows, in what was perhaps a concession to the current hard economic times.
But don’t tell that to Rolland. The designer bristled at talk of the economy, saying he was “sick and tired of hearing the word ‘crisis.’”
“That word is like a hammer that keeps hitting me on the head till I fall down,” said Rolland. “We have to fight and the best way to do that is to go ahead and be positive.”
Monday’s show, which was held in the Palais de Tokyo, was Rolland’s first since being admitted to the select group of haute couture labels. Rolland, a former designer for French house Jean-Louis Scherrer, had previously shown his haute couture line as an invited member — not an official one.
